Read for a chance to win free conference registration! As I write this letter each month, I wonder just how many folks read it. This time, I hope to find out. I am asking you to give me three minutes of your time to help us ensure our member data is accurate. We need to be sure our data truly reflects our members — good data in, good data out. Just think of it like updating your donor database!

Please use the form below to update your profile information. Taking the time to do this is important, as it helps us understand the true mix of our members: non-higher ed, small shops, etc. Not all fields are required, but please fill in all that you are willing to share so that we can serve you better in the long run.
If you’ve read this far, thank you. And now for the prize I mentioned. One member who updates their profile between now and April 15 will be selected at random to win a conference registration. And for anyone who is still reading: send me an email to [email protected] letting me know you updated your profile, and I’ll thank you by sharing a favorite “dad joke” or pun with you. Who can resist a “punny” joke, am I right?

Zen & Navigating Conflict article photo

A respected colleague of mine, Tracy Mills, often shares that “Fundraising is easy. It’s dealing with the emotions that’s the hard part.” Humans are complex beings that bring hope, fear, ambition, insecurity, shame, pride, family history, and deeply held identity to the table. Conflict in an environment as complex as the workplace is inevitable. Learning to navigate these road bumps peacefully is a skill set that we can develop from any role in our organizations, at any point in our careers...

The Future of Professional Conferences article photo

Before COVID turned our professional worlds upside down and inside out, conferences pretty much stayed status quo without much disruption. But now, professional development is facing a brave new world of options.

Fast forward to today. Now that we’ve had the luxury of learning in sweatpants in our home offices, will we travel to different time zones and stay in hotels to further our professional skills and knowledge?

For Better or for Worse article photo

Two years ago, on a Friday afternoon in March, I texted my husband that I was pretty sure the administration where I worked was going to tell us to go home and not come back for the foreseeable future. And I was right.

It was almost like getting a snow day or hurricane day. Part of me said “YAY!” and another part screamed “YIKES.” And so it has been ever since: some things about our new professional world are better, some are worse, some just different.

My recent post to the listserv was this:

Tell me what's better about your job since COVID hit.

Or tell me what's worse.

It yielded some interesting responses.

Protocols for Inappropriate Interactions with External Constituents

Leila Bhatti Migliorelli, Tufts University

Do any other organizations have a protocol to help guide their staff when interacting with donors, alumni, or volunteers if they find themselves in the midst of an inappropriate/offensive conversation? I've seen one sample of this from University of Michigan, and we're looking to create something similar at Tufts to help provide resources for staff should they encounter inappropriate behavior or language while doing business for the university.

Annual Report Survey

Samantha Sanchez, The Nature Conservancy

I am wondering if any of you survey your donors on their experience with impact reports and annual reports? If so, would you mind sharing what you have asked? I am curious to hear what others are doing and if the outreach has resulted in any changes to your process.
