Some exciting work is taking place to shape the future of educational efforts for ADRP members. You may recall seeing a recent survey asking for your insights on your donor relations, stewardship, and professional development education efforts. Those survey results are already being put into action! Earlier this month, at our board meeting, the board and I spent our first full day together laying the foundation for new educational training, webinars, and other professional development opportunities. This work is being led by our education chair, Mary Weingartner. We were joined by volunteers who represented three career stages: newbie, mid-level manager, and experienced professional. They helped ensure that we developed content to meet our members where they are and set them up with success on the career journey that lies ahead. On the second day, our board meeting was more traditional: we reviewed our strategic plan, selected our 2023 conference site (shhh… it’s a secret!), and finalized our budget for the coming year. We can’t wait to share more info about the future of our educational efforts with you soon! We’ll need lots of volunteers on several committees to help fulfill the needs of our members. We would love to see you raise your hand and help us bring your professional development dreams to life!
With gratitude,
Angela Altamore ADRP President

Care and Feeding of Donor Relations People
How to Love Your Donor Relations Self
Debbie Meyers Founder and Chief Inspiration Officer, EDiT!
Love in the time of COVID has produced many articles about self-care and why it’s important. Rest, stay hydrated, eat healthy food.
But what about professional self-care, particularly for us donor relations people? In a profession like ours that focuses on others, we need to be sure to take care of ourselves first.
Here are some practices to help us love our donor relations selves and keep that magic alive with our careers.

Synonyms for Support
Rachel Humphrey Associate Director - Fund Stewardship Fund Management, University Development and Alumni Relations, UC Berkeley
We’ve all been there, sitting in a desk chair, googling “synonyms for support.”
Well, maybe not all of us, but for those of us who write content for donor relations, you will identify immediately with the above sentence! How do we thank donors for their support of our organizations, institutions, and causes without using the word “support” over and over again?
One of the first assignments I was given in my earliest donor stewardship role almost eight years ago was to write a letter on behalf of the vice chancellor that would go out to all endowment donors.

Donor Relations: It's Not a Phase
Rebecca Geragosian Director, Stewardship and Donor Relations Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP)
When I began my career, “stewardship” and “donor relations” (used interchangeably) were referred to as phases — stopping points along a linear donor journey somewhere between one gift and the next. In other words: the strategies, actions, and tactics were transactionally implemented. These phases were triggered by a gift.
Those of us in donor relations and stewardship toiled over creating an annual cycle of stewardship touches meant to engage and inform donors about their gifts. Narrowly focusing on stewardship activities and actions in a vacuum (in the context of one year or transaction by transaction), we were wrongly assuming that together these actions created a cohesive donor experience.
