Let's Talk about Diversity and Inclusion
A Q&A with Susan Stith, Vice President of Diversity, Inclusion, and Corporate Giving in Human Resources.
When it comes to making philanthropy a joyful and rewarding experience for all, what does it mean to embrace diversity and inclusion as core principles in our organizations and with our volunteers and donors? Are there universal truths to aspire to and pitfalls to avoid? And how can we apply these ideals in our own communities most effectively, respectfully, and inclusively? How can we weave our commitment to equity and social justice into the very fabric of our organizations and the communities we serve?
At the 15th Annual ADRP International Conference, attendees will have the opportunity to explore these questions openly and honestly with St. Louisans like Susan Stith who are leading the charge. Susan is a champion of diversity and inclusion whose work has earned Express Scripts a place on DiversityInc’s 2018 list of 50 most inclusive companies in the country.
What will Susan bring to our expert panel discussion at “Let's Talk About Diversity and Inclusion” (Session 3F on Wednesday, October 3)? Learn more in her full Q&A.

Constant Crudités: Conducting a Review of Events to Avoid Overload
Ann Dingman Senior Advancement Operations Officer University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development
It was the evening I ate the Golden Beet with Apple, Goat Cheese, and Candied Walnut hors d’oeuvre for the third time in a month that it hit me. I realized we need to do something about how many events we have.
I came to the University of Minnesota College of Education and Human Development almost three years ago from another university, where I worked for a large unit that was event-averse. I was surprised at the time and money my new office was spending on a variety of development (not fundraising) events throughout the year—awards, guest lectures, campaign dinners, scholarship recognitions, tailgates, faculty presentations. Our donors enjoyed them and some programs had existed for many years, so they continued.

Advancing Philanthropy through Donor Relations and Stewardship
Julia Emlen Executive Editor The Journal of Donor Relations and Stewardship
Every nonprofit organization wants to celebrate those who support its mission with their time, talent, and treasure. Some donors embrace publicity for their giving while others wish to remain less conspicuous. For those who seek the limelight, donor lists, testimonials and personal interviews, recognition events, and stories on the internet and on paper and videotape are among the armamentarium available to organizations to showcase philanthropists and, incidentally, engage prospects.

Roadmap for Donor Relations
DeWayna Hogue Pittman Senior Consultant Highland Advancement Solutions
Do you use GPS? You know, Good Planning Systems.
Not many years ago, when we set off on a trip, we had several maps stuffed in the car door that we pulled out, unfolded, and tried to read before missing the exit. This eventually changed to printing step-by-step directions that still ended up folded and creased in the door. And then along came the portable positioning system receiver, which is now in your phone. Key in your destination, review the route, and off you go!

What do you like most about being a member of ADRP?
Since joining ADRP last year, I’ve really made the most of the webinars offered, giving a great insight into best practice among colleagues. They are a great way to hear from those working in similar fields, but with an international outlook. Because my team here is small and relatively new to the field, being able to ask questions and share ideas with others is extremely valuable to us and shows how we can all improve the impact of our work. However great it is being a part of organisations like ADRP, as a professional in the UK, it’s very hard to really get the most benefit from my membership, because it’s not viable to travel to the US to participate in all the conferences and meetings that are provided.

The Hub is seeking article proposals for new monthly issues!
Do you have a success story you would like to share? How did you handle a particular problem or project that seemed insurmountable? Have you discovered effective tactics that help gain a seat at the table? What are your thoughts on best practices or new, emerging ideas that take a donor relations/stewardship program to the next level?
We want to encourage our members—new and experienced—to share their insights, best practices, and what works (or doesn’t work!) when planning their shop’s programming and responsibilities.
