I’ve spent much of the last month reflecting on the past. I have reached the age in my life where the child-to-parent relationship is evolving. My conversations with friends these days are often focused on caring for aging parents and all the challenges that go with it. During a recent trip to see my mom, I found myself reflecting on some of the lessons she’s taught me over the years. It culminated when I saw a sign at a truck stop that read, “Sometimes I open my mouth and my mother comes out.”

This month’s Hub is all about reflecting on lessons shared in 2021. I encourage you to revisit some of these articles. Things may resonate differently now than they did a year ago. Lessons long forgotten may spark new inspiration today. Learning from the past helps us forge the path ahead and reminds us just how far we’ve come.

Happy reading!

Revisiting The Hub's Most Popular Articles from 2021

Most Read Articles Photo

If 2020 was the year of pivoting, then 2021 was the year of hybridity — of weighing print and electronic communications, of cautiously resuming events in-person with a Zoom backup plan, of asking what wisdom gained from a time of sheltering in place could serve as a stronger foundation for future endeavors. What were your most significant highlights and insights? As we dive into another year of projects, let’s pause to reflect on the past year in donor relations by revisiting The Hub’s most-read articles from 2021.

Whether ghostwriting a letter from your institution’s director, preparing gift acknowledgments, or designing a welcome packet for new donors, we put tremendous care into crafting messages that will powerfully and positively impact readers. Most contemporary style manuals contain guidance on bias-free and inclusive language, and your communications team may even provide recommendations. As donor relations professionals, we strive to create a sense of belonging and trust.

What is your greatest donor relations/stewardship achievement?

One of my greatest achievements is on the horizon! My team manages the naming opportunities and donor signage (as well as special stewardship!) for a new inpatient building on our Boston campus at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. I am enthusiastically engrossed in the logistics and impact of this capital project. I would welcome tips from anyone who has managed a similar undertaking — find me on LinkedIn!

How do you participate? However you want. Post an inspirational quote, write a blog, participate in a webinar, suggest topics or speakers. Take the stage or sit in the back. Talk. Listen. Read. Write.

Our first venture will be a guided discussion with Kay Coughlin titled "Human Giver Syndrome: Donor Relations and the pressure to be perfect and invisible."

Scholarship Appreciation in 2022

Mike O'Malley, University of San Diego

We're in the process of deciding what exactly our spring scholarship appreciation efforts are going to be in light of the omicron variant and surging COVID cases. In 2020 we used ThankView to collect videos from scholarship recipients and delivered them to the corresponding donors. I'd say it was a successful effort!

We were excited to welcome our donors back to campus this spring, but that is not going to be feasible.

I'm curious what you all are doing this year to steward your scholarship donors.
