How long have you worked in donor relations/stewardship, and how did you get involved in this profession?

I found donor relations through my love of events. My first position in development was supporting events within the Harvard College Fund over a decade ago. I am still enamored with the convening power and messaging platform that events offer — virtual or live!

Could you tell us something about your organization?

I work for Beth Israel Lahey Health. The organization was established a few years ago and has created a network of hospitals across eastern Massachusetts. With the creation of the hospital system, donor relations and my role moved into a central service, which means I have the opportunity to support all eleven hospitals within the system.

What do you like most about being a member of the ADRP?

I value ADRP for the depth of its membership. The access to interesting and engaged thought leaders within our profession is so valuable. I appreciate how open people are with tips and sharing best practices.

What is your greatest donor relations/stewardship achievement?

One of my greatest achievements is on the horizon! My team manages the naming opportunities and donor signage (as well as special stewardship!) for a new inpatient building on our Boston campus at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. I am enthusiastically engrossed in the logistics and impact of this capital project. I would welcome tips from anyone who has managed a similar undertaking — find me on LinkedIn

How significant a role does the use of social media play in your work?

The marketing department manages our social media.

What is the most important professional goal you are currently pursuing, i.e., attaining a degree, preparing to give a presentation, launching an initiative at work or in your community, etc.?

Not a professional goal, but something I find equally important as it supports a community effort within Greater Boston is my work with the Head of the Charles. Head of the Charles is the world’s largest rowing event. I am the co-chair for the volunteers’ committee with the Regatta. My role is to ensure our 2,500+ volunteers are properly thanked with sponsorship swag. This year our presenting sponsor is Vineyard Vines!

What has been your greatest work challenge during COVID-19?

Working in healthcare throughout the COVID-19 pandemic will be an unforgettable time in my career. While the pandemic reemphasized the vital role philanthropy plays in solving some of society’s most pressing issues — something I am sure most ADRPers can relate to from within their institutions! — there has been a consistent challenge of adapting to a new normal.

Is there a resource, i.e., book, blog, website, etc., that you would recommend to other ADRP members?

Not necessarily a resource, but rather a tip: I set up Google alerts for timely updates on principal gift donors, companies, etc. I couple this with regularly seeking out information related to the industries and ecosystems with which key donors are affiliated. I don't rely on the research team alone for this information as I believe it helps me think faster, make connections quicker, and build a distinct profile around donors that enhances strategic donor-centered stewardship activity. I would also suggest seeking out recorded interviews such as panel discussions, podcasts, etc., and listening for any mention that reflects an influence, like a mentor or philosophy. You can discern a lot about what is important to someone when you have an idea of what and who they allow to influence them.

What is the best piece of professional advice you have ever received?

One piece of advice I received very early in my career was to read everything you have access to. I took that advice to mean that information gathering is critical and a healthy sense of curiosity is important. This advice has served me well in many projects and roles.

Are there any particular stories, insights, etc., from your experiences in donor relations and stewardship that you would like to share with our colleagues?

I would love to cheer everyone on! Donor relations is the heartbeat of philanthropy and your perspective matters! Anything you have created, shared, or navigated has been better because of your involvement. I am always available to help celebrate a win!
