Once upon a time . . .

I’m a book nerd. I almost always have a big stack of books to catch up on. They range from fiction to professional development to biographies and nearly everything in between. Second only to getting lost in a stationery store, roaming around a book shop is one of my favorite activities. And even though I know I have a stack on hand, it’s still hard to resist spending another Saturday morning lost in the stacks at my local library, leaving with a tote bag full of gems. In another life, I may have even been a librarian. . . . my work collection has an old school card check-out system so I can keep track of the books I loan out!

Let's Get Personal: Storytelling for Donor Engagement

There is a lot of power in a good story. One that elicits emotion and strikes a chord. One that entertains, inspires, and leaves a reader wanting to know more . . . or in some instances, to do more.

As a mission-based organization, you have a story to tell. And most likely, your loyal donors already know the basics — the why, how, and what part of your story. But in order to keep existing donors engaged and draw new ones in, you need to go deeper than that. You have to introduce them to “the who."

The Importance of Personalized Memorial Letters

Many shops simplify their memorial acknowledgments by sending an already crafted postcard or template and filling in the blanks with no personalization. They don’t see the value of spending much time on these “one-time” givers. I’ve learned, however, that there’s something special about a personalized memorial letter that often yields new supporters for your cause.

What is your greatest donor relations/stewardship achievement?

One of my responsibilities at Shepherd Center is managing our women’s philanthropy circle, Women Shaping Shepherd. The members each pay annual “dues” to be a part of the group, and they decide by member vote how to allocate the collective funds each year. This group started in 2015 with 35 members who raised $40,000. This past year, we had 119 members raise just over $171,000. This group is special for so many reasons, but what is truly remarkable is that we are able to highlight programs that really need funding but don’t always get the spotlight they deserve. As a result of this group, we provide so many important programs to patients and families.

I would love to hear from anyone who awards/matches students to scholarships within their donor relations/stewardship team and uses something other than Blackbaud Award Management or their own custom-built system.

Donor Satisfaction Survey
Elizabeth Gray, University of West Florida

In the new year, I would like to send out a survey to our donors, to measure donor satisfaction. Have any of you done this before? If so, would you mind sharing the pros and cons, what types of questions were asked and how this was helpful to your team?
