Conference Learning from the Session, Measures of Success for Donor Relations and Stewardship

Anne Manner-McLarty
CEO and Lead Strategist
Heurista

At the 2018 ADRP International Conference, I tested a new session format at the recommendation of my co-presenter, Debbie Meyers. She’d attended a similar version of this presentation at the New York regional and encouraged me to reimagine it with an element of small-group work. In St. Louis, about 100 practitioners holding various titles and representing a wide variety of organizations attended the session.

After a quick overview of basic measurement concepts and terminology, we broke into small groups to role-play creating a measurement plan. Members of each group were asked to adopt the part of one of the many stakeholders involved in designing a measurement plan. These roles included donor relations director or manager, administrative assistant, advancement leadership, key donor or volunteer, advancement services, IT coordinator, and fundraiser.

When Penelope Burk opened her keynote on the last day of the 15th Annual ADRP International Conference in St. Louis, she said the words that made every Penelope Burk fan-girl and fan-boy in the room smile ear to ear:

“You are my people!” she cheered, smiling broadly and raising her arms as if to envelop the crowd in a hug.

Ms. Burk is the founder and president of Cygnus Applied Research, Inc., a Toronto-based research, training and education firm that is defined by its promotion of the philosophy of donor-centered fundraising. Many in the donor relations field began their careers by studying the results of the Burk Donor Survey – the first comprehensive study of its kind on non-profit donor relations in America. At the ADRP Conference, she introduced the second edition of her well-known book, Donor-Centered Fundraising.

What do you like most about being a member of ADRP?

One of the things I love the most is how beneficial membership can be for people at every stage in their career. When I was first starting out, ADRP helped me get up to speed on the tricks of the trade very quickly—and even now that I’ve been in the field for a while, there’s still always something to learn. The webinars and other resources are incredibly helpful, as is the expertise of the other members. For anyone working in stewardship, membership here is truly invaluable.

Write for The Hub: We Want to Hear from You!

The Hub is seeking article proposals for new monthly issues!

Do you have a success story you would like to share? How did you handle a particular problem or project that seemed insurmountable? Have you discovered effective tactics that help gain a seat at the table? What are your thoughts on best practices or new, emerging ideas that take a donor relations/stewardship program to the next level?

We want to encourage our members—new and experienced—to share their insights, best practices, and what works (or doesn’t work!) when planning their shop’s programming and responsibilities.

We welcome all submissions related to donor relations and stewardship, but we especially encourage ADRP members to step forward and share their expertise and experiences in the profession.

The 2018 submission form is available any time you have an article proposal to submit. We have included the webinar topics for each month, in case you would like to tie your article to a specific webinar topic.

Please submit your article proposal today! We can’t wait to hear what you have to say!
