In Service: The Column of the ADRP President

Keri Kallaway

Dear fellow ADRPers,

As I considered my first message to you as ADRP President, I took a walk down memory lane and reflected upon my first notable experience as an ADRP member in 2008, my involvement as a volunteer, and the 12-year pathway that brought me to my current level of service.

In 2008, about one year after I joined Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation, I was blessed with the opportunity to attend the International Conference in St. Louis (yes, we’ve held two conferences in St. Louis). It was then when I truly understood the significant impact of a donor relations program. I heard from and met long-time members like Lori Green, who chaired that conference, Mary Solomons, Daphne Powell and Jennifer Johnson, and so many more. I learned about digital stewardship, campaign kickoffs and how to handle crucial conversations. Most importantly, I found a home. Although I already had been a part of the donor relations profession for several years at that point, it was that moment in time when I knew this would be my passion for many, many years to come.

The Best Way to Say Thank You? Make It Personal

Valerie Harris
Senior Director, Stewardship Communications
University of Pennsylvania

Are you responsible for writing gift acknowledgments to your organization’s donors? Do you prepare individual reports to donors on the impact of their giving? Is it your job to draft correspondence to donors and other stakeholders on behalf of your nonprofit’s leadership?

If you answered “yes” to any of my opening questions, you have one of the most important roles in the fundraising cycle – donor communications.

Fighting the Curse of "We've Always Done It This Way" Part II: Acknowledgements

Krystina Lucido Wales
Director of Donor Relations & Stewardship
GBMC Healthcare

Changing the mindset of a traditional organization whose donor pool is built on majority older-generation individuals can be difficult. The value in new ideas and approaches must be carefully thought out and qualified.

After much best-practice research and codifying of quality examples, I was given the green light one year ago to implement, essentially, an overhaul of our organization's standard acknowledgement process.

Margaret Stutt
Associate Director of Donor Stewardship
UC Berkeley Haas School of Business

One thing is for sure: it will be impossible to rally students, faculty and staff on campus to hand write thank-you cards to donors for Donor Appreciation Day this year. This has been a standby for educating students on the culture of philanthropy, as well as sourcing good stewardship touchpoints for our donors.

International Stewardship Award Spotlight

University of British Columbia's Thanksgiving Thank-a-Thon
2017 ISA Winner

In 2017, The University of British Columbia’s successful Thanksgiving Thank-a-Thon project earned them ADRP’s Digital Communications Award. And while 2017 may seem like a lifetime ago, the methodology and the strategy UBC implemented can provide us all with valuable insight and inspire us to find ways to embrace digital communication channels to forge deeper connections with our donors. Now more than ever, it’s important to be able to maintain relationships virtually through social networks and online engagement.

What is your greatest donor relations/stewardship achievement?

Preparing and sending out over 700 personalized stewardship reports each year—by myself—is a herculean task, but I am most proud of creating “Thank you Day at Mount A.” This event, held on International Thank You Day (January 11) not only spreads awareness about philanthropy to students, but helps me collect many hand-written thank-you notes for donors to scholarships, bursaries, and internships. Donors love to receive these with their stewardship reports in the fall. I would estimate that the number of student thank-you notes and letters that I receive now has doubled since Thank You Day at Mount A has been established. Watch an inspiring video about Thank You Day at Mount A.

Do you communicate directly with aid recipients to collect materials for narrative reporting? If the answer is yes, then this is the session for you. Narrative reporting relies on content directly from recipients, but how do you produce high-quality content that will inspire donors when you’re relying on recipients to create that content?
