In Service: The Column of the ADRP President
Angela Altamore Associate Vice President, Stewardship and Donor Engagement Kansas State University Foundation
Hello friends,
Last week, your ADRP volunteer leadership gathered for a two-day board of directors meeting in Indianapolis (with a few members joining remotely). We spent two full days working on initiatives to advance the ADRP mission. We updated the policy manual with a focus on ensuring that our reporting from the ADRP office aligns with the current needs of our organization. We also reviewed our bylaws and made edits to refresh them (last done in 2016). In the coming months, you can expect to see an email asking you to review and approve those edits.
We also finalized recommendations for our next President-elect and Secretary/Treasurer (terms which begin at the close of this fall’s annual meeting). With those recommendations, the nominations committee now seeks applications for a Director. After applications close, the committee will conduct interviews and make their recommendation to the board. The board will then vote to approve the slate. That Director recommendation, along with the officers mentioned above, will be shared with members via email and you will be asked to vote to formally approve the slate. Stay tuned!
We also got a sneak peek into the ADRP 2022 International Conference: Soaring to New Heights, happening September 21-23, in Albuquerque. Registration opens in the coming days and I am convinced you will love the conference! It has some of the traditional things you’ve come to love, but also has several new elements to freshen it up as our profession continues to soar to new heights. I can’t wait.
After two full days, I left Indianapolis with a new energy. Exciting things are on the horizon for ADRP and I am so thankful to work with such dedicated volunteers: From fellow board members to conference committee members to the countless other volunteers that keep working to inspire our members and advance our mission…thank you. Also, to our office staff, who worked hard to ensure the meeting logistics were smooth and that we had plenty of caffeine and good food to keep us focused. I am so proud to be a part of this amazing community. I’m inspired by you and can’t wait to see you again (or meet you for the first time) in Albuquerque. (And hopefully, by that time, I’ll be able to spell Albuquerque without spell check!)
With gratitude,
Angela Altamore ADRP President

Engaging Stakeholders in Building a Donor-Centric Program
Rebecca Geragosian Director, Stewardship & Donor Relations CJP
Part of creating a strong philanthropy program at any nonprofit is understanding the wants, needs, and interests of your donor base—complete with all their nuance. Not a single non-profit out there, no matter how specific the mission, has a homogenous donor base with singular wants or concerns. Within each, there are micro-communities based on such things as specific areas of impact, giving behaviors, giving thresholds, tenure, and depth of involvement in the organization. For those of us in stewardship and donor relations (S&DR) who are trusted to maintain these donor relationships, the challenge is knowing what resonates with whom, and understanding what the best vehicle is for delivering that information.

NYC, the Epicenter of…Conference Planning?
Stephanie Lamphere, Co-Chair Northwest Regional Conference Director of Donor Relations SUNY Empire State College
Back in the early spring of 2020, the Northeast Regional Conference committee’s plans were well underway for that year’s event. The 2019 conference, held at New York University in the heart of New York City’s Greenwich Village, had been a rousing success. That next year, the conference had been moved from the always-unpredictable March date (will it be 20˚ and snowing, or 70˚ and sunny? Flip a coin!) to mid-July.

Get excited, ADRP! Our in-person international conference returns this September 21–23, in Albuquerque, NM.

Introducing The Hub Editorial Board
We are pleased to introduce you to The Hub’s editorial board.

Together, the editorial board will work with ADRP staff to deliver this e-newsletter to your inboxes each month. We are accountable for the quality of The Hub’s content and our goal is to identify important topics, source high-quality submissions, and organize the content flow. Most importantly, we welcome your input via article submissions and feedback so please keep those coming.
As seasoned donor relations professionals, we’d be remiss if we did not offer appreciation. Many thanks to the recent contributors to The Hub; below you will find a list of members who had a byline in the last two years (if we’ve missed you, let us know). Many thanks to our ADRP leadership (presidents and board members) for their contributions. We thank the ADRP staff for leading the charge on all things marketing and communications. Finally, we offer sincere thanks to writer/editor extraordinaire, Debbie Meyers, for her dedication to this ADRP member benefit and to previous editors, Anna Morrison and Sarah Brickman, for passing a well-lit torch to guide our way.

What is your greatest donor relations/stewardship achievement?
In a previous role, I worked closely with members of our Board of Directors on our regional events. One member of the board had especially high standards for the event he was hosting, and our budget did not match his expectations. I was able to temper his frustration by bringing him closer to the planning process and by letting him vent whenever we could not accommodate a request. The calls were frequent but worthwhile as we ended up with a successful event and a happy board member. After the event, the board member made an impactful gift to the foundation that was directly related to my effort.
