In Service: The Column of the ADRP President

Michal Shaw
AVP of Donor Relations
Oklahoma State University Foundation

Michal Shaw

On behalf of the ADRP Board, volunteers and staff, I want to send good thoughts to everyone as we all work through current events together. ADRP is indeed a family uniting in Building Relationships for Good. As we all navigate our work and non-work lives in these difficult times, please know that your organization is here for you and we remain very active.

Here are some updates:

  • Our monthly webinars remain a terrific way to learn effective stewardship practices. We have always encouraged members to watch these in a group at their institution so you can discuss in real time together. Since registrations cover one individual and are shared with in-person groups only, we are temporarily lifting our policy and encouraging the sharing of post-webinar recording and materials with your staff to watch. Watch the recording together virtually, and come up with some creative discussion topics!

  • Due to public health encouragement to not congregate in large groups for the immediate future, we have decided to postpone ADRP’s Southeast Donor Relations Conference (SEDRC), originally scheduled on April 30. The new date of November 12, 2020, has been set. We appreciate your understanding and patience as we continue to monitor the situation and respond appropriately.

  • The 2020 International Conference in Albuquerque September 23–25 is not anticipated to be affected by the current health concerns at this time. The planning committee is working hard to assemble a dynamic program – presentation proposals are due April 20. Registration will open on June 1 and applications for Blair Scholarships will open later in the spring. We hope to see you there!

  • Please also mark your calendars for Friday, July 17, for the 2020 New York City Regional Workshop and Thursday, July 30 in Denver.

  • ADRP is still seeking nominations for President-Elect for the September 2020–2023 term. Officers advance our profession and gain valuable leadership experience while serving ADRP's members and volunteers. ADRP members may self-nominate or nominate a colleague with demonstrated excellence in donor relations and stewardship, leadership qualities, and a collaborative spirit via our online nominations portalIf nominating someone else, the nominator will submit the form and is asked to obtain and include the nominee's statement of interest. Nominations are due by Friday, April 10, 2020.

  • Finally, the ADRP member listserv is always active and a rich source of effective practices and resources from our generous community. If you are not currently subscribed, please visit www.adrp.net/member-listserv for more information.

Thank you, my ADRP family, for all that you do. We will continue to provide engagement opportunities for members during these difficult times.

Video from ADRP in Response to COVID-19

A letter from our board of directors

Some of us got together earlier this week for an informal chat and we wanted to share it with you. It was a bit therapeutic to learn that others feel mentally drained while learning how to balance work, kids, and yes, even the challenge of a frozen screen when recording a video chat!

At the same time, this conversation offers insights as to how our efforts continue to steward and engage donors. We hope you’ll take this time to kick back for 20 minutes, put your feet up, and find comfort in members of your ADRP family, who are in this with you. Keep up the good work, ADRP peeps. You are each making a difference…every single day.

ADRP List Responds to COVID-19

Over the last two weeks, the ADRP listserv has come alive with queries and responses from across the spectrum of ADRP membership. Members from small nonprofits, independent schools, large universities, and health systems have weighed in with their plans and concerns about continuing to steward and communicate with donors, given the new reality of social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Doctoring Up Your Donor Communications

Debbie Meyers
Assistant Vice President for Advancement Operations
Oklahoma State University Foundation

It’s been fascinating reading ADRP listserv posts about who’s doing what recently with communications and events. It’s also been interesting to compare how emails from organizations have approached the topic. Like you, I’ve received a flood of messages from vendors, companies and institutions, many of which I’ve had minimal interaction with, everyone from the cable company to my software vendor. Here are a couple of instructive examples how two organizations communicated with their clients.

Webinars to Keep You and Your Colleagues Motivated

Our members and supporters remain top of mind during this time, and with so many events being cancelled and rescheduled, we wanted to offer everyone the opportunity to continue their education and access valuable resources. Planning a TED Talk Style Event for Your Organization
Rachael Day, University of Maryland

Planning a TedTalk style event is a heavy lift but with the right resources and stakeholders, one that will creatively convey the work going on in your organization. This session aims to cover the planning of a TedTalk style event from inception to timelines, speaker recruitment, rehearsals, and the show itself, as well as working with speakers to craft a talk that is translatable to non-academics or members of the public. Hear how the UMD College of Education implemented this event to kick off their 100th-anniversary celebration.

Sarah Dale
Donor Relations and Grants Coordinator
Humane Society of Tampa Bay

ADRP member for 1 year

How long have you worked in donor relations/stewardship and how did you get involved in this profession?

I have worked in this profession for four years. I previously did not have any donor relations experience, but did have customer service experience. I was a volunteer for the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and when this position opened up, it seemed like a good fit.

Write for The Hub: We Want to Hear from You!

The Hub is seeking article proposals for new monthly issues!

Do you have a success story you would like to share? How did you handle a particular problem or project that seemed insurmountable? Have you discovered effective tactics that help gain a seat at the table? What are your thoughts on best practices or new, emerging ideas that take a donor relations/stewardship program to the next level?

We want to encourage our members—new and experienced—to share their insights, best practices, and what works (or doesn’t work!) when planning their shop’s programming and responsibilities.

We welcome all submissions related to donor relations and stewardship, but we especially encourage ADRP members to step forward and share their expertise and experiences in the profession.

The submission form is available any time you have an article proposal to submit. We have included the webinar topics for each month, in case you would like to tie your article to a specific webinar topic.

Please submit your article proposal today! We can’t wait to hear what you have to say!
