In Service: The Column of the ADRP President
Michal Shaw AVP of Donor Relations Oklahoma State University Foundation
Our profession centers around making love connections – love for patients, art, history, education, research, nature, you name it. Every day we get the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues to build and strengthen donor relationships through strategic communications and engagement opportunities that celebrate donor impact. As donor relations professionals, we get to actively participate in shaping connections and moments that create meaning for our donors. Whether it’s an impact report, acknowledgement, endowment report, event, or face-to-face meeting with a recipient, we get to play an important role in creating a donor experience and ultimately, motivate and inspire continued engagement. We get the opportunity to see people when they are at their very best – when they are giving back to make a positive change.
From the Archives (May 2004): Falling in Love (Again) with Donor Relations
Debbie Meyers Then: Director of Stewardship and Donor Relations, University of Florida Foundation Now: AVP of Advancement Operations, Chautauqua Institution
For the first few years of my job, I was totally enamored with the programs I was creating and the endowment reports I was generating. Everyone loved my work, and I felt validated and loved, professionally.
But after a while, I began feeling like the romance had left my job. The honeymoon was over...

At Brown we’re constantly sharing stories with our donors. Stories about students who are impacted by gifts made through the annual fund, stories about programs made possible with donor funded support, stories about new and innovative things happening on campus. But in February, we turn the camera around so to speak and ask our donors to tell us a little bit about who they are...

March 17, 2020 | 10:00 AM (PT) Weaving Diversity and Inclusion into Donor Relations Practice Erin Caitlin McVeigh, Justin Kaplan, Iryelis Lopez, and Maria O'Meara Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives work best when they are woven into the fabric of everyday practice, rather than being tacked on as a standalone program. In addition to ongoing commitments across Dana-Farber Cancer Institute toward fostering a welcoming environment for all staff and patients and the recent hiring Dana-Farber’s first Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer, the Donor Relations team within the Division of Philanthropy recently assembled a working group to contribute to Dana-Farber's larger efforts in this area.

Member Spotlight
Melissa Declue Interim Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship University of South Caroline
ADRP member for 3 years
How long have you worked in donor relations/stewardship and how did you get involved in this profession? I’ve worked in donor relations and stewardship for six years. At the start of my career in higher education, I got involved with donor relations and stewardship out of curiosity. When I was working in academic affairs at a technical college, I saw a position post for a Donor Relations Coordinator. At the time, I didn’t fully grasp what donor relations was, but what I did understand was the idea of developing relationships. Relationship building is the highlight of what we do, so with a background in psychology, I love it! Every day is a new opportunity to get to know someone new.
Write for The Hub: We Want to Hear from You!
The Hub is seeking article proposals for new monthly issues!
Do you have a success story you would like to share? How did you handle a particular problem or project that seemed insurmountable? Have you discovered effective tactics that help gain a seat at the table? What are your thoughts on best practices or new, emerging ideas that take a donor relations/stewardship program to the next level?
We want to encourage our members—new and experienced—to share their insights, best practices, and what works (or doesn’t work!) when planning their shop’s programming and responsibilities.
We welcome all submissions related to donor relations and stewardship, but we especially encourage ADRP members to step forward and share their expertise and experiences in the profession.
The submission form is available any time you have an article proposal to submit. We have included the webinar topics for each month, in case you would like to tie your article to a specific webinar topic.
Please submit your article proposal today! We can’t wait to hear what you have to say!
