About the Webinar

Diversity and inclusion (D&I) initiatives work best when they are woven into the fabric of everyday practice, rather than being tacked on as a standalone program. In addition to ongoing commitments across Dana-Farber Cancer Institute toward fostering a welcoming environment for all staff and patients and the recent hiring Dana-Farber’s first Chief Inclusion and Diversity Officer, the Donor Relations team within the Division of Philanthropy recently assembled a working group to contribute to Dana-Farber's larger efforts in this area. While this effort is still new and nascent, the Donor Relations team has begun putting forth fresh ideas focused on how each of us, regardless of job title, can more consciously incorporate D&I into everything we do. In this session, presenters from Dana-Farber’s Donor Relations D&I working group will share examples and experiences from ongoing and new efforts to highlight D&I and solicit input from webinar participants in a format interspersed with opportunities for brainstorming. The presentation will be geared for all audiences, regardless of Donor Relations team size, addressing key areas of stewardship and recognition such as experiential events and tours, recognition displays, impact reports, acknowledgement letters, executive remarks, newsletter articles, and more. Our goal is to share what we’re starting to do and initiate brainstorms with others in the donor relations field during the webinar.

Learning Objectives:

Webinar participants will learn about new and nascent efforts led by Dana-Farber’s Donor Relations team to weave D&I into major activities, contribute to knowledge sharing by describing their own efforts in these areas, and brainstorm ways for everyone, regardless of industry or size of shop, to create an inclusive community where differences are celebrated and where all are welcome. Learning Objectives include:

1.  Learn more about potential ways to incorporate D&I more prominently in recognition events, institute tours, and recognition displays. Webinar presenters will then be asked to share their perspectives and ideas.
2. Learn more about potential ways to incorporate D&I into content development and dissemination through donor reports, talking points, and fact sheets, highlighting disparities research and community programs, whenever possible, to increase awareness among donors. Webinar presenters will then be asked to share their perspectives and ideas.
3. Learn more about potential ways to incorporate D&I into recruitment and team building, including our efforts with Dana-Farber’s Office of Workforce Development to host high school students for summer training programs; ensuring job descriptions attract qualified applicants from diverse backgrounds; conducting Institute tours for local high school and colleges. Webinar presenters will then be asked to share their perspectives and ideas.
4. Other content will include how Donor Relations is connected to Dana-Farber’s LGBT & Friends Employee Resource Group and Mosaic Employee Resource Group, and how the team is adopting a working group mission statement.
   
   

Erin Caitlin McVeigh, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
With 17 years of fundraising experience, Erin McVeigh is the Assistant Vice President of Donor Relations at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  In this position, she oversees an exceptional team of donor relations professionals responsible for innovative stewardship and recognition programs in service to the generous donors who choose to support Dana-Farber's mission to provide expert, compassionate care to children and adults with cancer while advancing the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, cure, and prevention of cancer and related diseases.

Justin Kaplan, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Justin Kaplan is a Science Writer on the Donor Relations team at Dana Farber. His professional interests center around communication strategy in the life sciences and healthcare. He holds an MPH from Harvard’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, where he served as president of the Queer Students Association.

Iryelis Lopez, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Iryelis Lopez is an Officer within the Donor Relations team at Dana-Farber. She graduated from Wesleyan University with a bachelor’s degree in American Studies. While there she wrote an honors thesis that focused on the relationship scholarship recipients held with the donors who funded said scholarships.

Maria O'Meara, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
Science writer Maria O’Meara writes extensively about Dana-Farber’s research and programming that aims to improve access to health care, and actively promotes these efforts among members of the Division of Philanthropy. Previously, Maria wrote award-winning advertising campaigns, websites, and public education materials for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and for other organizations that promote public health.
