Whether your shop already has a planned giving team or it needs to set one up, effective stewardship of these donors requires understanding how they differ from much of your donor base. Our three-person panel will help you to steward these loyal donors as well as help you justify any budget increases you need to do so. Many institutions cut their planned giving budgets in the last decade, in spite of the fact that an investment in planned giving almost always reaps sustained and substantial benefits.

Marjorie Houston

Marjorie Houston has more than 20 years of experience in the field of Gift Planning and 30 years in the Development field as a whole. As Assistant Vice President for Advancement at Wheaton College, Marjorie oversees the Major Gifts, Gift Planning, Corporation Foundation Relations and the Wheaton Fund and is presently overseeing the completion of the college’s largest campaign in its history. Previously she served as both Executive Director for Development and Director of Gift Planning at Wheaton and 12 years as Executive Director of Gift Planning at Brown University.

Marjorie is past president of the Planned Giving Group of New England, Planned Giving Council of Rhode Island and the Canaras Group; as well as a past member of the Board of Directors of Partnership for Philanthropic Planning (National Committee on Planned Giving.) Marjorie has been published in Planned Giving Today, Journal of Gift Planning and Trust and Estates magazine and has contributed to articles in CASE Currents, Chronicle of Higher Education, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, SSgA Client Newsletter and Bloomberg’s Wealth Manager. In October 2008 she was featured in Currents Magazine for her work on Women and Philanthropy. She was on the Editorial Advisory Committee for The Gift Planning Journal and has spoken at regional and national conferences, such as the PPP National Conference; the ACGA National Conference; State Street Global Advisors Annual Planned Giving Conference; the CASE Advanced Planned Giving Institute; the CASE Women and Philanthropy Conference and CASE Webinar Conference on Women and Philanthropy; the Planned Giving Group of New England; the MaGiC Conference and CASE District I Conference panelist on Metrics and Measurements. Marjorie is an avid runner and biker.


Nancy Rieger

Nancy O. Rieger, Director of Development, Office of the Vice President, Office of Development and Alumni Relations, NYU Langone Medical Center, began her career at public relations firm Rubenstein Associates and quickly segued into journalism, spending ten years at Capital Cities/ABC. She then moved to a family investment advisory firm, managing its communications for seven years. Ms. Rieger has been a writer/stewardship manager in the nonprofit sector since 2004, first at The New York Botanical Garden, and now at NYU Langone, where she has worked since 2007.

 


Meg Thomson

Meg Thomson is the The Nature Conservancy’s Legacy Club Manager. In this role, she oversees the strategy and donor engagement plan for the Conservancy’s 20,000+ Legacy Club members. These are members who have chosen to leave the Conservancy in their estate plans or made a life-income gift that benefits the Conservancy. She has been with the Conservancy for 8 years, all in their Gift Planning department and working on donor stewardship and relations.
She graduated from Penn State University with a major in English and minor in Spanish.
