In Service: The Column of the ADRP President
Angela Altamore Associate Vice President, Stewardship and Donor Engagement Kansas State University Foundation
Hello friends,
I was blown away by the response I received to my March column. Thanks to all who updated profiles and reached out to me requesting a dad joke. In typical DR fashion, many of you returned the favor by sharing a joke of your own, so it was a win-win scenario.
To close the loop: the lucky winner of a free conference registration is Julie Pearson from the Canterbury School! I just learned who our conference keynotes are and believe me, you won’t want to miss them! And remember, you can still update your profile on the website.
April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month. I’d like to offer a genuine note of gratitude to our volunteers at all levels. It takes hundreds of individuals spending time dedicated to countless tasks from writing The Hub articles, presenting webinars, selecting content for conferences, planning regional events, developing marketing materials and beyond, to keep ADRP alive. You truly are the heartbeat of our beloved organization.
If I could thank each of you in person, I would, but it seems there aren’t enough hours in the day to balance that along with my day job. However, please know I am in awe of the dedication you have to ADRP. I hope you find the volunteer experience as rewarding as I do.
Finally, I want to close with a brief reflection on a longtime member, Daphne Powell, who recently passed away. Daphne was a lifelong supporter of donor relations and a mentor to many in the industry. Her dedication to our profession was second to none and it seems only fitting to remember her during Volunteer Appreciation Month.
The next time you may feel overwhelmed with the work-life-volunteer harmony, please remember that in your own way, you are a mentor to others around you. You may not see yourself in that way, but others around you do.
We are stronger because of one another and that is what makes ADRP…well, ADRP. We lift each other up in community and benefit from the diverse thoughts, experiences and insights our volunteers bring to the table.
If you aren’t yet a volunteer, we have room for you. Come join us and help keep our community blossoming.
With gratitude,
Angela Altamore ADRP President

“Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together.”
– George Eliot
As donor relations professionals, we certainly bring that truth to life.
Each day, we make calls, write letters, install pin letters, report on impact and provide support in countless ways. Do we sometimes feel that our work fades into obscurity after the plaques are unveiled? Do we wonder if what we do really makes a difference? I’m sure all of us have wondered that on occasion.
But I’m here to remind you that we do indeed makes a difference. And I bring examples with me.

Metrics — Some Key Philosophical Concepts
Debbie Meyers Founder and Chief Inspiration Officer EDiT!
Much of what we do in donor relations involves feelings. We acknowledge donors’ gifts to show our gratitude and to make them feel valued. We recognize them so they feel good about supporting our mission. We want to strengthen their loyalty, pride, and affiliation so they feel inclined to continue giving and serve as ambassadors for our institutions.
Feelings are great. But how do you measure them? How do we know we’re doing a good job?

Tip: Member Directory
Remember that super-amazing new ADRP colleague you met over Zoom last year at the virtual conference? Well, sort of -- you’ve got a first name, a geographic location, and you’re pretty sure they worked in healthcare. Queue the member directory in MyADRP. You can perform a basic search or an advanced search to locate that super-amazing new colleague, or to find other donor relations professionals in your area, or to get the email of a peer with whom you’ve lost touch! The catch: we all need to update our profiles to maximize the directory. Do so here.

Trick: Dad Jokes
If you read through the above MyADRP Tip, then to steal a brilliant idea from our fearless leader, my oh-so-charming teenager will send you a terrible Dad Joke, one legitimately told by his Dad. Email me at [email protected] and let me know you updated your MyADRP profile -- and let the chuckles (and groans) begin!
